pip

Pips name reveals a lot of things about him as a character in Great Expectations. When you think of the word "pip" you almost instantly think of something small or a short high pitch noise. In the novel this is exactly how i feel about Pip. He is surrounded by mean people that seem to thrive on pips misfortune like Mrs. Joe, jaggers, and Orlick. Being constantly surrounded by these people has made pip afraid and the author makes it seem like every time he talks it is a short quick comment almost as though he doesn't intend for people to hear because he is afraid of what the consequences could be. The author also portrays him as physically a smaller person because the author portrays all of the people that surround pip as strong powerful people it makes the reader realize that he is smaller. Pip is a very suitable name for Pip because he has many of the qualities that the reader would think when they hear the word "pip"

“…I felt fearfully sensible of the great convenience that the Hulks were handy for me. I was clearly on my way there. I had begun by asking questions, and I was going to rob Mrs. Joe.”
So far in the book Great Expectations pip is clearly afraid of the people he is surrounded by with the exception of Mr. Joe. He is intimidated by Mrs. Joe because she beats him and therefor he is afraid of her. She also constantly puts him down in front of his other relatives and therefor when people tell him to do something even if its not morally correct he will do it anyways because he is desperate for anybody's acceptance. He wants attention and he wants people to like him and is willing to do things that are not the right things because he wants them to like him and he is considered a bad kid because of this.
