pip

Pips name reveals a lot of things about him as a character in Great Expectations. When you think of the word "pip" you almost instantly think of something small or a short high pitch noise. In the novel this is exactly how i feel about Pip. He is surrounded by mean people that seem to thrive on pips misfortune like Mrs. Joe, jaggers, and Orlick. Being constantly surrounded by these people has made pip afraid and the author makes it seem like every time he talks it is a short quick comment almost as though he doesn't intend for people to hear because he is afraid of what the consequences could be. The author also portrays him as physically a smaller person because the author portrays all of the people that surround pip as strong powerful people it makes the reader realize that he is smaller. Pip is a very suitable name for Pip because he has many of the qualities that the reader would think when they hear the word "pip"

  1. I agree that Pip is looked down upon by characters like Orlick and Mrs. Joe. They treat Pip with a sense of disrespectful and it is shown quite often. When Pip introduces us to Orlick he explains, " This morose journeyman had no liking for me. When i was very small and timid, he gave me to understand that the Devil lived in a black corner of the forge..."(113). This teasing done by Orlick shows absolutley no respect towards Pip and shows how Pip is being looked down upon by Orlick. Although Orlick is not the only one treating Pip as an insignificant part of society. Mrs. Joe has repeatidly hit Pip with the "Tickler"(8). Mrs. Joe is not a considerate and loving guardian that most boys would love to have around. She has only further instilled a level of self loathing into Pips life that has made him feel even smaller in society.
