In the novel great expectations pip has many realizations over the course of his life. He also feels the ramifications of his realizations in big ways throughout the novel. One of the things that Pip get caught up in is his desire for Estella. The whole book he gets so focused on thinking how he can attract he loses the chance to be with her. He tries to be a gentleman throughout the novel for Estella but doesn't realize that she has moved on with her life and forgotten about Pip. He realizes this and is devastated that he wasted his life for something he will never have and because he will never get Estella no matter how hard he tries. Estella on the other hand focuses on something other than Pip and her whole life thinks that her and miss Havisham have a great relationship. But what Estella doesn't realize is that Miss Havisham is using Estella to satisfy her hatred for men because of what happend to her. When Estella realizes this she is also devastated along with Pip in the sence that they both spent most of their lives for something that will never happen or that wasnt true

  2. I agree with you when you say Pip is too caught up with Estella. You can tell he is caught up in his desires for her which could also be considered borderline obsession because on page 243 he ,"Said into my pillow, I love her, I love her, I love her! hundreds of times." That should tell you right there that he is way too into Estella. I do not agree with you when you say that Estella does not realize that Miss Havisham is using Estella to satisfy her hatred for men. Estella has been conscious of what Miss Havisham has been doing. We can see that Estella has known what Miss Havisham has been doing all along when she asks Miss Havisham, "Who taught me to be hard? Who praised me when I learnt my lesson?" (pg 305) From this quote we can see that all along she has known how Miss Havisham has been manipulating her and how even though she knew she still went along with it. So I do agree that Pip has spent some of his life trying to get with a girl he will never obtain because he is too blinded by love to even notice how she feels about him. While Estella knows exactly what she is doing.
